Rosatom will validate decommissioning projects for the Akkuyu NPP

TVEL JSC (managing company of Rosatom's Nuclear Fuel Division) has signed a contract with AKKUYU NÜKLEER A.Ş. for drawing the cost plans for decommissioning of power units 1-3, as well as the unit 4 with infrastructure facilities of Akkuyu NPP, and development of the relevant methodology.

"The contract was concluded following the results of tender procedures as part of Rosatom's cooperation with the Republic of Turkey. It is fulfilling the obligations under the intergovernmental agreement on the construction of Akkuyu NPP concerning the decommissioning of NPP units and waste management. In this area, Rosatom has accumulated a profound expertise and has all the necessary technological solutions. Russian specialists will provide comprehensive support, offer a safe and efficient approach to planning the decommissioning of Akkuyu NPP power units and waste management," commented Natalya Nikipelova, President of TVEL Fuel Company.

The design working life of VVER-1200 power units at Akkuyu NPP is 60 years with a possible extension option. Thus, already at the stage of construction of the nuclear power plant, Rosatom will develop a cost plan, work out a methodological basis and calculate the amount of contributions to the relevant funds, so that future work on the decommissioning of the Akkuyu NPP will be provided in full and in a time.

Earlier, TVEL JSC signed into an agreement for scientific and technical support of the Belarusian NPP, preparing for decommissioning of the nuclear power plant’s power units.
